A Brief Look at the Latest Graphics Cards From AMD
AMD’s new AMpler AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT delivers new levels of performance. Great gaming experiences are made possible by bending the usual rules in gaming. The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT Series graphics cards defy conventional conventions with a 7 fabulously powerful process fused with custom-designed R DNA architecture. More powerful than any other card, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT boasts memory bandwidth comparable to two mainstream cards placed side-by-side. Easily, the most advanced Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) available on the market, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is a high performance card for hardcore gamers. The new card’s memory interface is clocked at higher speeds than reference cards, enabling the card to operate at true gaming speeds without the excessive speeds and distortions typical of the standard reference cards.
Real-world benchmarks have provided positive reaction to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT processor. Using the same test system, we performed four real world benchmarks using the same games, each performed at their recommended configurations. These results show a dramatic improvement in speed that we observed in both the gaming and application tests. We will now present two of the bench tests performed with the rdna driver.
This first benchmark had us measuring the rx 5600’s and comparing it to the previous generation card from the AMD Pro Series line. The new cards include an improved version of the RV Streaming Engine. The Streaming Engine now has two separate engines allowing for greater engine power and better performance from the gate chips. This is especially useful when it comes to streaming large files. AMD has also increased the number of Streaming Engine processor cores from six to eight. This is a great boost for performance but does introduce a slight increase in the cost of the card.
In the July submission, we measured the new Mobility processor from the AMD Radeon R7 series which has several new features. One new feature is the AMD Freezing Technology which allows the graphics card to be cooled by the computer which in effect gives the user more battery life. This feature is only found on the mobile AMD cards so it is good to know if this new technology will make its way over to the desktop graphics cards as well.
A few months later, we conducted two additional overclocking benchmarks with the same samples to see if the overclocking went the same as we had seen with the rx series. Again, we tested the mobility version of the card. Again, we saw very low overclocking results of just 50mv. This means the card was very temperature resistant. The high refresh rate offered by the screen also didn’t help much as the clock speed stayed at the default frequency. However, the clockspeeds did improve quite a bit and the clockspeeds ended up being over three times faster than the reference card.
Now we move onto testing the latest mobile series of the AMD Radeon cards. Again, we found that the new cards are running very hot due to the use of the new’Polaris 10′ architecture. This architecture is much more efficient than the previous ones and allows for higher clock speeds. However, the clock speeds for the rx series still remain quite low. This could be due to the higher bin sizes which were introduced with the card.
We also tested the latest mobile cards from two companies – the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the LG Optimus Prime. Both of these devices utilize the same Adreno processor but have different memory bandwidth requirements. Both of these devices will need a large amount of memory to run smoothly. The clock speeds for both devices were around the same level with the Samsung Galaxy S4 coming out slightly ahead in terms of the graphical performance. It looks like the new clockspeeds introduced with the rx series are a bit too much for this device and we will have to wait for a few months before we can really test them properly with more comprehensive benchmarks.
